“Eat your 5' a day and concentrate on getting varied fruit and vegetables into your diet for good health.” - World Health Organisation (WHO)
Eat your Greens!!
From since I can remember, anyone and everyone has said that I should eat lots of things that tasted horrible but was apparently good for me? Apples were great, but on reflection the dreaded 'Sprouts' appears first into my psyche and always proved a battle most weekends, my parents saying eat them and me making every excuse under the sun not to do so. They were indeed 'food horror' alongside cabbage, peas, carrots, swede, cauliflower et al. Strangely as an adult I now like all of the aforementioned vegetables, but in true cyclical fashion I now have to convince my own children to eat the same things I once despised.
Are they really that important and if so, then why?
Some reasons why you should eat your 5' a day 👊
Vitamin C delivers antioxidant properties that help control damaging free radicals so protect us from disease. The body also needs Vitamin C to make collagen, a fibrous protein in connective tissue that connects various systems in the body such as nervous, immune, bone, cartilage, blood, and others.
Our bodies need vitamin C to convert the food and drinks we consume into energy and absorb other micronutrients to keep our bodies working efficiently.
Improves skin appearance and reduces tiredness and fatigue so you feel much better and are then less likely to get viruses etc. as you are not run down and susceptible to catch colds and instead repel foreign invaders to your body through a strong immune system.
Nearly all fruit, vegetables, beans and pulses, whether fresh, dried, frozen, tinned or canned counts towards your 5 a day so it's all about getting them into your body without too much fuss. If you can make that experience varied, easy, nutritionally viable and tasty then only good health can follow.
