Time to Hibernate or time to shine ?

November 18, 20222 min read

The comfort of reclusion, the poetry of hibernation”- Marcel Proust

hibernate in den

Why do we hide away when it gets cold and then come out and be sociable butterflies just in time for the Xmas holidays, but our clothes no longer fit? Clocks go forward and people get November blues. The heating is put on full, (if you can afford it this year) and your Netflix account is exhausted with everything remotely interesting watched in a comatose state. The Cookie jar and Booze cabinet become the friends that you can't be bothered going out to see any more because it's too cold, dark and wet. That's probably okay for a week perhaps but any longer is not good for us, is it?

In fact, if you hibernate before Xmas the following may happen:

  • You get fatter and unfit with increased visceral fat that can harm your cardiovascular health.

  • Mental health is compromised as you lose real social interaction and become more paranoid.

  • Less self-care is observed, and people often become self-loathing.

  • Daylight and rare glimpses of the sun for vitamin 'D' are lost as it seems easier to stay in and not get dressed, the day is lost instead of being attacked and enjoyed.

  • Importance of the virtual you become more amplified through obsession with social media instead of real and actual feel-good social interaction amongst friends and family.

  • Reclusive thoughts, ahh! its Xmas soon so I'll stay in until then (OVER 6 WEEKS AWAY !!!!!!!)

Don't be SAD!!

Obviously, I'm a 'half glass full' kind of guy and think instead of semi-hibernating and feeling sorry for yourself let's instead use this next 6 weeks leading up to Xmas to attack the day and get fit, get lean, have more energy and go into the holidays with clothes fitting but feeling like a million dollars, ready to really enjoy the festive period and make the most of your time off with friends and loved ones after working so hard all year.
